Ying Miao references the phenomenon of live bullet commentary on Chinese sites like Bilibili. These websites allow comments to respond directly to events occurring in the video, and in sync with other viewers, creating the sense of a "shared watching experience."
Ying Miao is an artist who currently resides on The Internet, the Chinese Internet (the Great Fire Wall) and her smartphone. She received her BFA from the China Academy of Fine Art’s New Media Arts department, and her MFA from the School of Art and Design at NYSCC at Alfred University, with a focus in Electronic Integrated Arts. Ying Miao weaves humor into her work across formats such as the web browser, GIFs, apps, social media, and Second Life. She inspects the visual language born from the internet, and it's effect on how it changes us as we interact with it. She has shown her works in mainland China, Taiwan, Europe, the United States, on internet and the virtual world of Second Life. Her most recent solo exhibition is in the Chinese pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale.
